  • Stack: the whole hierarchy of folders, layers and sublayers of one material set.
  • Sublayer: the lowest unit that produces pixels; every kind in chapter 7.
  • Bus: image bus = paints channel content; mask bus = masks out image bus content.
  • Channel: a named PBR output such as Colour or Roughness; or yours custom channels.
  • Fac socket: a channel's opacity input, named <Key>fac - Cfac for Colour, Wearfac for a custom Wear.
  • Mask: any mask-bus result; white shows, black hides, just like in any image editing software
  • Anchor: a sublayer that reuses another sublayer's result for masking.
  • Generator: a node group that produces a procedural mask from baked helper maps.
  • Filter: a sublayer that changes what is below it in its layer stack.
  • Choke: a filter that erodes or expands an edge of whats under.
  • Cascade cache: the pre-baked GPU textures of the stack; Cache All builds it.
  • GPU baker (Torch): the Windows executable that bakes procedurals, custom nodes and UV transfers.
  • Material set: the materials that share one stack.
  • Solo stack: the private stack a material keeps while it belongs to no material set.
  • Object set: the objects painted and exported together, merged into one paint object.
  • Cutter: a _CUTTER. box that Boolean-cuts an object set's paint objects.
  • Output route: what the set's node group feeds to the material output.
  • Export preset: a JSON description of the textures to bake and how to pack them.
  • UDIM: tiled textures, one file per tile; supported end to end.

This guide describes Overpaint 1.0 as built in October 2026. It was reviewed against the current UI, exporter, Material Paint and UDIM code on 2026-10-25. Blender 4.5.8 and 5.2.1 are the validated versions in the repository; Blender 5.3 is not verified here.
